The Union
The Rideau Students' Union was founded on November 19th, 2020 by Faiz Jan, Sean MacLeod, Gareth Dunbar and Zane Balkissoon as an organization dedicated to advocating for policy on behalf of students and creating a united voice for youth to ensure they are heard on issues of importance. Since then, the Union has grown to include hundreds of members from across the City of Ottawa and has tackled numerous issues and received recognition from many organizations, including the United Nations Association in Canada, the Ottawa Citizen and the Ontario Government.
The Rideau Students' Union was initially founded on the United Nations Canada's Sustainable Development Goal Generation platform, but has since grown to operate on its own as a stakeholder on the province of Ontario, and students' affairs.
The Union's guiding document, the constitution, was initially written in December of 2020.

Leadership Structure
In the union's current state, the leadership structure consists of two Co-Presidents intended to coordinate with the union on union affairs, as well as on projects, Officers who operate specific tasks relating to the operation and affairs of the union, a Board of Directors intended for higher oversight on the union, managing elections and voting, and otherwise ensuring the union's larger success, and Project Coordinators, responsible for coordinating and helping lead projects.
The Rideau Students' Union's leadership structure as initially defined in the union's first constitution defines a governance structure of an appointed and passed-on Governor role responsible for upper-management and oversight on the union, as well as Presidents, responsible for coordination of the union and projects. In addition, executives roles existed for union affairs and other relevant offices, as well as Committee Chairs, which acted as coordinators for committees.
In October 2021, committees were eliminated in their entirety.
In March 2022, the leadership structure was modified (see constitution), replacing Governor with a Board of Directors, replacing Executives with Officers, and replacing Presidents and Vice Presidents with Co-Presidents.
In November 2022, an amendment to the constitution introduced the place for honours and awards, introduced alongside the "Rideau Honour".
